Project Proposal

Rationale

Over the time I have spent on this course, I have gained various skills from each of my projects. In my first year, I learnt a great deal about how to use the basic functions of Unity, such as the UI and how codes and building a game worked, but I only made games in 2D. Regardless, these skills helped me build up several projects, and allowed me to gain further skills in the second year due to having previous knowledge from the projects done in the first year. I have learnt how to make a game from an auditory, visual, and interactive standpoints. In my second year, I have developed my 3D skills, such as modelling and 3D Unity. I learnt some more time management skills from my work experience, and a lot about character design in my Unit 12 research portfolio. Finally, overarching the whole 2 years, I have developed my drawing skills, both physically and digitally, an exponential amount. This is all a great development from when I joined the course, where I had never drawn digitally before, and had no prior knowledge on Unity, or anything that went into making a game. All this has made me decide to move forward with going to Teesside University to study games design further. It’s also inspired me to put my skills to the test by making a fully fleshed out first person shooter in the form of a sequel to my FMP last year: “The folk laws of fright 2”.

Proposal

The idea I had was to put what I learned in my Unit 12 to good use and make the sequel to my previous FMP. I would accomplish this by creating a 3D follow-up to the side-scrolling shooter platformer I made last year, being a 3D shooter platformer. I plan to put my Unit 12 to use in the form of following character design theories, focusing on character designs, redesigning old character designs to fit said theories, etc. I plan to have it on PC only, as that is what I can create the easiest, and would most likely work best on PC, as people tend to have a preference towards first person shooters being on PC. I am aiming to have a fully functioning, fully playable, and visually pleasing game by the end of this project. I would also like to have fully functioning audio by the end of the project too, as then I would have created a game successfully from a visual, interactive, and auditory standpoint. The reason I wanted to make this project was because I really enjoyed researching into and creating ideas based around folklore last year and wanted to improve some of the designs, I made too last year as I felt they were too basic. The main thing outside of delivering a fun experience is to inform people about different kinds of folklore, as I believe it is an interesting topic that should be talked about more. I would like to have much more of a variety of folklore in this game and would like to convey it in the same way as I did last time, having the enemies and levels being based around different kinds of folklore with bits of other folklore sprinkled in for even more variety. As for the genre, I chose first person shooter as it is what I am most familiar with, and what I feel I am most confident with in creating, it also keeps the shooter aspect from the first game, keeping consistency. I would like to have a heavy focus on movement, as I find that incredibly fun in FPS games. Finally, for my target audience, I would like to target 12+, but also have it be an enjoyable experience for everybody, I would like it to be somewhat of a horror game, and would like it to be somewhat challenging, as if I targeted it to a younger audience the game may be too hard, however, as I am aware, people will not always follow the age rating of a game, so there will be difficulty accessibility options for those who are less experienced/younger than intended.

Evaluation

As I go through this project, I will create a lot of work, I would like to evaluate each piece of work I do thoroughly and think about how it compares to how I would have liked it to be and see if it is related to tie into my Unit 12. I intend on keeping most of my decision making in my reflective diary, but will also document it here and there throughout my work where necessary, such as under the concept art and things similar to that.

Proposed Research Methods and Aims

(Any and all sources that I used for these can be found in my annotated bibliographies on my research pages in sections 1 and 2, as I will find them as I progress through the project, as there will be quite a few!!)

-Research into enemies (Looking up different folklore and analysing how I could implement it into my final game)

-Design Feedback (Make a survey full of character designs for each folklore, ask for feedback, and adjust according to said feedback)

-Research into influences (Looking up how what influenced the project was accomplished)

-Initial Audience survey (Asking about preferences and maybe some opinions on early concepts)

-Test feedback on prototypes (Adjust according to feedback)

-https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJPH49iJ5tod21sjkPZJ6bT8of6jEVn9H - YouTube Playlist of tutorials I intend to follow for my practical research to create my game that I have collected, all of these may or may not get used, as I am unsure on how much work I will be able to complete at this current point in time in terms of Unity work, and time I can afford to spend sitting through unity tutorials.
